John of Nepomuk is the patron saint of Bohemia. He was thrown from the Charles Bridge and drowned in the river Vltava on the orders of King Wenceslaus IV of Bohemia. Nepomuk had failed to support the king's interference in appointments to senior church positions. Alternative accounts suggest that he was martyred for not disclosing the secrets of the confessional as confessor to the Queen of Bohemia.
