Sangam derived from the Sanskrit word for confluence is where the Ganges meets the Yamuna (and the legendary and invisible (!) Saraswati river). It is a site of pilgrimage, and the location of the Maha Kumbh Mela (which occurs every 12 years (next in 2013)). It is also the site of the annual and much smaller Magh Mela at which these photographs were taken.
