Villa Savoye was designed by Le Corbusier (1887-1965). The villa was built as a weekend house for the Savoye family and sited in a field surrounded by mature trees. The building was completed about 1929 and is a seminal work of twentieth century architecture.
The house makes use of pilotis (pillars or columns) to lift the structure off the ground. All the living space in the Villa Savoye is on the first floor and is divided up with partition walls. There are no load-bearing walls in the design allowing for different floor plans on different levels. The elevated structure was also created to accommodate arrival at the house by car - the car driving between the pilotis around the curve of the entrance porch to the sheltered front door at the far side of the house.
Ramps as well as a spiral staircase are used to allow movement between levels and further external ramp leads to the roof garden.
